Semi Final - 40 Over Game

v Tuggeranong @ Chisholm 2 - Won by 61 Runs

The Northettes' chances against Tuggeranong in the Glenda Hall 1v4 semi-final looked grim from the start, as rain threatened to call the whole game off. The prognosis looked equally grim when we eventually got on the pitch, only to throw away four early wickets. A 50 run partnership between Caddy (24) and Woodsy (30 ret) steadied the ship for Norths, while brilliant resistance from the tail end (including Kal with 6 and Sparky 3 no) saw out the 40 overs and added valuable runs both off the bat and through extras. The Northettes finished their innings with 8/110, and only marginally confident of defending it.

What confidence we had took a beating as Tuggers' opening bats got off to a threatening start; memories of the way they hit us around Chisholm 1 earlier in the season flooded back. We stunningly grabbed the momentum, however, as Sparky bowled Tuggers' captain, and the other opener fell soon after. Jill then hogged the ball to finish up with 4/10, Sparky tore through the top order with 3/18, Caddy picked up 2/22 and Jenn wrapped up the match with 1/5. After 22 overs, we had Tuggers all out for 59, for a 61-run victory.

In all, not enough can be said about our efforts with the ball and in the field. All four bowlers used bowled at their best - they were tight, smart and aggressive. Likewise in the field - we attacked, held onto catches and put pressure on the batters at every opportunity, including a quickfire stumping by Kal.

So, onto the Grand Final for the Northettes. Come what may, we have already had a blindingly good season: great cricket and great fun with a great group of girls. C'arn Super Northies.

Round 12 - 40 Over Game

v Eastlake @ Kingston - Won by 124 runs

The Northies women returned from two weeks' break to play Eastlake in a 40 over game on Sunday. Winning the toss, the Northettes batted first on a newly revived Kingston wicket, and started strongly as Kristy Anderson and Jenn Macklin held their nerve against some good opening bowling. Their good work was consolidated as first and second drops Kristen Woods and Adelaide Jones settled into a huge partnership, which only came to an end as first Woodsy (30 ret) and then Addy (50 ret) were forced to retire. Addy was kept company by Jill Sheppard (25) as she racked up her half century; Addy's retirement slowed the run rate but the tail was ably held up by Jill, Mel Parker (10), Kally Gross (9) and Em Waters (6 no). After 40 overs, the Northettes finished with an admirable (and possibly a club record) 6/194. The highlight of the innings was strong, sensible batting the whole way down the order; everyone showed great shot selection and patience.

The defence began perfectly as Shannon Byrne took the wicket of Eastlake's best bat with the first ball of the innings, helped by a brilliant catch from Jenn at first slip. The Eastlake bats then settled, scoring some cheap runs, before we picked up the attack and wickets began falling freely. All five bowlers used bowled energetically but also smartly - something which we have struggled with so far this season. Everyone got amongst the wickets: Jill took 3, Caddy and Mel 2 each, and Jenn and Sparky 1 each, with a top class runout from Etax rounding out the innings. The only slight flaw to the Northettes' game was dropped catches; with this fixed, the girls pose a huge threat going into finals.

Onto Queanbeyan at home this weekend, and on with the finals march.

Round 10 - 20 Over Game

v ANU @ KTMO - Lost by 8 Wickets

The Northettes' first game for 2012 saw them face old rivals ANU at KT oval. Norths won the toss and batted first, getting off to a solid start as Addy Jones (29) and Kristen Woods (27) put together a 50 run partnership off 42 balls. Once Woodsy fell, however, Addy soon followed and it fell to the middle order to regain control of the innings. Jill's slow 23 not out helped to stable the Norths line up as relatively new players and fill-ins were forced to try to withstand a capable ANU attack. After 20 overs the Northettes ended with 8/97.

Our defence faced the immediate handicap of being without our two strike bowlers, Hannah and Sparky. Kristy Anderson and Em Waters filled in more than ably, taking a wicket apiece and unsettling the ANU batsmen. Unfornunately tight bowling from Addy, Jill and Woodsy went unrewarded as ANU's first and second drop bats settled in and chased down our total in 18 overs and with eight wickets in hand. It was however a generally positive effort by Norths - Etax returned successfully from injury, Muscles opened the bowling (and batting) with ease, new players Tanja Cobden and Mel Wells gave their all in the field (and Tan finished not out with the bat), and ring-ins Karen and Louise threw themselves into what at times was a pretty grim task.

After a bye in round 11, the Northettes will take on Eastlake on 5 February at Kingston.

Mid Season Report

The Northettes start 2012 with a solid third place on the women’s ladder, two points behind Tuggeranong and ANU. An impressive start to the season (best in years, if not ever) saw three convincing wins against Weston Creek, Eastlake and Queanbeyan.

A great start by Emma Waters in the Weston Creek game returning 2/17 of 6 overs and acting captain Addy Jones bringing the Northettes home with 36 off her innings within the crease. Kristy Anderson and Michelle Miles both made their debut in round two against Eastlake. Kristen Woods made her come back into competitive cricket with 53 off 42 balls, a striking and welcome addition! Round three brought the Northettes home to Reid with a strong side, coming out onto the field with an impressive momentum and taking solid wickets all round against Queanbeyan. Coming up to round four, with three wins behind them, the girls seemed pretty comfortable. The first 40 over game of the season against Wests brought with it Susan Cadman (her superb run out a highlight of the day, breaking the bails) and Sophie Massellos (with brilliant bowling from a terrifyingly long run up). The batting on our side turned treasonous as returned captain Jill Sheppard ran out Addy and a mutiny was only just averted. Addy then caught Soph after fielding for Wests bringing first-time cricketer Tanja Cobden to the crease. Through some brave attempts by all of the girls, the Northettes lost by 22 runs, easily avoidable if not for our wides.

Getting back into the 40 over mind set we came up against ANU with low expectations in round five. Shannon Byrne opened with probably her best spell (being quietly impressed with herself) with Soph backing up from the other end with an outstanding pace. All round the bowling was fantastic with mentions to Mel Parker (3/13), Jill Sheppard (3/22) and Hannah Osborne (2/8 from 6). Chasing 98, Adds and Kristy took the batting in their stride with a partnership of 43. Hannah and Mel put on another 46 as the Northettes were able to run down ANU with 18 overs to spare and 7 wickets in hand. The best win of the season so far! Round six came as a well-deserved break and the Northettes came up against Tuggeranong down in Chisholm for a T20 the following week for round seven. A steady batting innings brought us to a defendable 3/99. Unfortunately Tuggers openers knew how to play our pace and the runs started flowing freely in their direction! Our slower bowlers temporarily put a lid on the runs but not soon enough and the game was lost. Not, however, before an awesome catch by Hannah off Jen’s bowling, the only wicket taken by the Northettes. Round eight came along after a long week of finding some fill-ins to take on Weston Creek. Thanks to Addy and Hannah, we were still in the game and found ourselves all out for 144. Jill’s and Addy’s bowling took down 7 wickets between them whilst Hannah was unrewarded with 0/29 from 8. Creek managed to win by 3 wickets but the Northettes still felt this was an appropriate result for a below-strength team. Round nine came about after much rain and many storms forcing our T20 against Wests to be washed out, despite Andy’s tireless efforts in preparing the pitch.

Overall the newer girls have settled in well and the core of our team still stays intact from previous seasons, something not every team in the comp can brag about. The New Year brings the Northettes some hope yet with our upcoming game against ANU on Sunday.

Round 8 - 40 Over Game

v Weston Creek @ Philip Oval - Lost by 3 Wickets

Having scraped together a team (with the help of fill-ins Julie and Ellysha - thank you!!), the Northettes trudged down to Phillip to take on Weston Creek. We won the toss and batted first, with Kristy and Addy opening and looking good. Two cheap dismissals later Creek had us 2/22, and looking shaky. Another innings-saving partnership from Addy (50 ret) and Hannah (34) kept us in the match however, and Julie and Kally held up the tail end to see us all out for 144 from 36 overs.

Happy to have scraped together a defendable total, the realities of bowling without a full strength team sunk in. Hannah bowled tightly and smartly but went unrewarded (0/29 from 8), while Jill had all the luck at the other end (4/35 from 8). Addy rounded out her brilliant match with 3/38 from 8, while Kristy (0/29 from 5) and Kally (0/10 from 2) were called on to bowl in horrible conditions, as Creek's middle order set in and the game was nearing its death. The final result saw Creek win by three wickets in what was a huge upset on paper, but in reality an apt result for the below-strength Northettes. On to vengeance against Wests next weekend!

Best player: Addy Jones (50 retired; 3/38)

Round 7 - 20 Over Game

v Tuggeranong @ Chisholm 1 - Lost by 9 Wickets

After 90mms of rain in Tuggers over the weekend, the Northettes still made it to the field at Chisholm 1 on Sunday. Losing the toss and being sent into bat on a good wicket but still damp outfield, we started slowly but surely with an opening partnership of 28 from Addy and Muscles. Three quick wickets quickly dried up the runs and things looked particularly grim for Norths. We were saved however by a brilliant partnership from Jenn (27 no) and Woodsy (30 ret), both of whom looked like lasting another 50 overs had the game allowed it. At the end of our 20 overs, the Northettes had posted a defendable 3/99.

Any hope of defence faded quickly. Tuggers' opening bats took quickly to our bowlers, using what is normally an advantage (the competition's two quickest bowlers in Sparky and Hannah) against us as they piled up runs behind square. An early change to Norths' slow bowlers stemmed the tide somewhat, but we were never in with a chance against some superb batting. Jenn took the only wicket of Tuggers' innings, from a sharp catch by Han at midwicket. All around, a disappointing result for the Northettes. Onwards and upwards to next week v Weston Creek.

Player of the match: Jenn Macklin (27 no; 1/21)

Round 5 – 40 Over Game

v ANU @ Reid – Won by 7 Wickets

Coming off a defeat to Wests in round four, the Northettes faced ANU at Reid in round five with low expectations. Losing the toss and being sent into the field, Shannon Byrne opened the bowling with probably her best ever spell. From the other end new Northette Sophie Masselos bowled with plenty of pace and swing and looked threatening. The ANU bats saw off the early challenge however, before a change of bowlers saw wickets begin to tumble. A sharp run out from Susan Cadman at square leg was followed when the other opener fell to Jill Sheppard and Norths had ANU a comfortable, but not devastating, 2/42. From there, Jill, Hannah Osborne and Mel Parker tore through the ANU middle order, with the next six wickets falling for 13 runs, and ANU eventually all out for 97. Best of the bowlers were Mel (3/13), Jill (3/22) and Han (2/8 from 6), with special mention to Sparky, whose 0/13 came from six overs and conceded no extras.

Chasing 98, Addy Jones and Kristy Anderson opened the batting for Norths with a brilliant partnership of 43. At 2/49, the momentum looked to possibly have swung away from the Northettes, before Mel and Hannah put on 46 for the third wicket. A solid, patient innings from Addy (34) and super hard hitting from Han (29 no) were the highlights of the Northettes' innings, as we ran down ANU with seven wickets in hand and 18 overs to spare.

Time for a bye this weekend, before we trek down to Chisholm to play Tuggers in round seven. In all, a brilliant win for the Northies women, cementing their place as a premiership contender this season.

Round 4 – 40 Over Game

v Wests UC @ Aranda – Lost by 22 Runs

The Northettes ended their winning streak with a hard fought but disappointing loss to Wests at Aranda in round four. Sent in to field, opening bowlers Shannon Byrne and Hannah Osborne dumbfounded the Wests bats, with Han breaking through early while Sparky's improved swing kept a lid on the runs. Agonisingly slow batting by Wests frustrated the Northettes bowlers and fielders alike, before Susan Cadman's brilliant run out from the covers injected some brief enthusiasm. The Wests' innings soon returned to its previous slowness, due in part to some great fielding by Norths. A notable late cameo from first gamer Sophie Massola (who sent the stumps flying with her second ball) suggested signs of great things to come for Soph, before the innings drew to a dull close.

In sum, the Northettes' bowling was, like the girl with the curl right in the middle of her forehead, both very very good and horrid. Hannah's change of pace, Sparky's use of the seam and Soph's incredible shape and accuracy were largely unplayable. The wides, though. So many wides.

The Northettes started well with the bat, with reliable opener Addy Jones making 21 and (very) part-time bat Jill Sheppard making what I'm fairly sure is a career high 16. Having run Addy out and being bowled the next ball, Jill is shamed to admit to starting the Northettes' rot, as wicket after wicket tumbled and the chase quickly fell away. Solid defences were put up by Kristy Anderson, Em Waters and Kal Gross, and a brave effort made by the tail end (particularly Sparky for the last two wickets) before we collapsed.

Two things for the Northettes to work on before the clash of the titans this weekend: accurate bowling and defensive batting. Despite this one disappointing result, things continue to look promising for the Northies women. We'll all be looking to make amends v ANU on Sunday.

Round 3 – T20

v Queanbeyan @ Reid - Won by 8 Wickets

The Northettes faced Queanbeyan in their round three match on a soggy, dead Reid wicket. With a full, strong side and still getting their heads around the expectations that go along with sitting on top of the ladder, the girls were happy to field first and take a look at Queanbeyan’s line up. Shannon Byrne started strongly from the dry end, removing an opener with a top-edged catch to point. The momentum continued in the third over with a sharp/lucky run-out, before stalling as Queanbeyan bedded down a slow but interminable partnership. Strong support bowling from Mel Parker and Em Waters kept a lid on Queanbeyan’s scoring, before Addy Jones came on to take two quick wickets (and ruffle some Queanbo feathers). Em, Mel and Shannon rounded out the innings with genuinely good wickets – good balls too often get punished in women’s cricket, but thankfully had the desired effect for the Northettes. Special mention to Sparky with well-deserved figures of 3/9 from her six overs.

Chasing 74, Kristen Woods and Michelle Miles were thrown in the deep end and told to hurry things up so we could hightail to KT to watch 1st grade. Michelle saw off some spirited bowling (from two horrifically young Queanbo bowlers) before falling to a perfect ball; Woodsy and Kristy Anderson’s ensuing partnership set Norths up for a convincing win. Once again forced to retire, Woodsy left a gutsy and impressive Kristy to chase down Queanbeyan with plenty of overs in hand.

A couple of self-indulgent points to be drawn from the match: the Northettes are without doubt the most aggressive and most vocal fielding side in Glenda Hall; they are likewise the most close-knit team, and genuinely enjoy each other’s company, which for a group of 12 women is no mean feat; and they are – scarily – a genuine chance of a premiership this season. Still undefeated, we face Wests in the season’s first 40 over match this weekend. Be there.

Round 2 – T20

v Eastlake @ Forestry - Won by 46 Runs

The return of Jill Sheppard to the helm saw Northettes win the toss and elect to bat. For the first time in recent history they also had a full 11 players to take the field including new recruits Kristen Woods, Kristy Anderson and Michelle Miles.

Former Meteors player Woods moved straight in at the top of the order alongside Jen Macklin and straight away looked like she had never been away despite over 5 years away from the crease. Woods retired at 53* off only 42 balls and with able support from Addy Jones (19*), Mel Parker (16) and captain Jill Sheppard with a quickfire 10 from 7 balls saw Northettes get to a daunting 3/125 off their 20 overs.

This left an uphill battle for Eastlake and although they were up with the rate with the score at 0/24 from 4 overs wickets soon began to fall and with this the runs dried up. Eastlake were soon reduced to 6/37 in the 9th over after the introduction of captain Sheppard. Her threatening off breaks retuned figures of 4/13 from 4 overs. Along with support from Emma Waters (2/12) and Mel Parker (2/10) Eastlake were soon bundled out for only 79 after 17 overs, assisted by a whopping 32 wides from the Northettes attack.

This leaves the Northettes with 2 convincing wins from 2 games going into Round 3 against Queanbeyan.

Round 1 – T20

v Weston Creek @ Stirling - Won by 6 Wickets

Looking to grow on the third place finish from last season the Northettes arrived at Stirling with the core of last years team still together.

After losing the toss and being put into the field stand in captain Addy Jones gave the new ball to Shannon Byrne and Hannah Osbourne. Despite Osbourne returning the miserly figures of 1/8 from 4 overs Creek found runs easy to come by in the early stages and were 2/57 at the half way stage looking at posting a commanding score. The fall of Seckold and Claridge and the retirement of Sweeney quickly turned the momentum over to Northettes and eventually restricted to Creek to 6/91 off their allotted 20 overs with Emma Waters returning 2/17 off 6 overs.

Set 4.5 runs per over Northettes got off to a bad start with Jen Macklin being bowled in the second over. This however brought Captain Jones to to the crease who proceeded to dominate anything sent her way. With support from Mel Parker (14) and Hannah Osbourne (10) Jones built a splendid innings of 36* to see her team home against her former club with over 4 overs to spare.

The Northettes could not have asked for a better start to the new campaign
