Round 6

Eagles v Wests U/C @ Aranda – Lost by 29 Runs

Eagles are looking good for “The Long Run”

One of the most interesting games we have had for a while against the first placed team in our comp. There were at least 2 occasions were the game seemed lost, but we showed some great fighting spirit to come back. Unfortunately, we fell short, but much to be gained from this match. West’s won the toss and Batted first. They were 0/77 after the first 15 over’s and it appeared we were in for a long day. John Holmes (0/16 off 5) bowled nice and tight once again, but it was John McCluskey (2/36 off 9) who managed to remove both openers in a short space of time and after a fantastic direct hit run out by Chris Taylor things were looking up. Chris Taylor (0/27 off 9) produced a really good spell without any luck, but played a great part in slowing the scoring rate. Chris will take plenty of wickets in the future. Salvo DeLorenzo (2/36 off 8) managed to pick up a couple of wickets during the latter stages, but it was Andrew Cleghorn who produced a sensational spell to wrap up the tail. He finished with the magnificent figures of 5/8 off 4 over’s bowling his non bouncing off spin. He singlehandedly put us back in the game.

Andrew Cleghorn proceeded to put us out the game when dismissed cheaply. Our batting started poorly with no major contribution from our first 5 batsmen, but pleased to say that Brodie Wann looks like a talent, he only scored 7 coming in at no 3, but he has a great style and temperament and should make some good scores down the track. At 5/32 we looked gone, Salvo DeLorenzo (60) and Dan Stiller (30) took advantage of some poor bowling and put on 60 runs in 6 over’s. Dan is one of the sweetest strikers of the ball we have and was clubbing the leather all over the ground. He took 20 off one over and was exciting to watch. Salvo finally found some form with the bat and kept us in it. Things were looking good at drinks even though we were 6/95. Dale Holmes (17 no) played the ball around and has shown great improvement with the bat. Unfortunately our last 4 wickets went cheaply and we fell 29 runs short.

Regardless, signs were good and this team will beat those above them throughout the course of the year. Lessons learnt – never think you can’t get back in the game and be patient as opportunities will present themselves.

Bald Eagles v Queanbeyan @ KTMO – Won by 5 Wickets

Although Steve Grimmett was back amongst the ranks, Dan Gerritsen took the helm for their Sunday game at KTMO against Queanbeyan. After some over night rain and more rain delaying the start Queanbeyan won the toss and decided to bat first on a damp pitch with the game reduced to 32 overs. This was a good move for the Bald Eagles as they quickly reduced Queanbeyan to 5/15. Joe Laria picked up an impressive 4/14 from 7 overs and was well supported with the new ball by Cade Carr who returned 1/20 from his allotted overs. Although no more wickets were taken economical bowling from Stix (6 overs for 15 runs) and Brad Roughton (6 overs for 19 runs) enabled the Baldies to limit Queanbeyan to 106 at the close of their innings.

On a pitch offering a fair amount of assistance to the bowlers this was always going to be a tough task and require somebody to step up to the plate to guide the team. Steve Grimmett (1) went early, soon followed by Little (3) and Moger (2) leaving the Bald Eagles in the precarious position of 3/35. This left opener Pigot at the crease who was joined by Arcella. They soon went about taking the attack to Queanbeyan and seized on anything loose to keep the score board ticking. Pigot finally fell for 34 with the score on 78 and was soon followed back to the sheds by Roughton. With the chief destroyer with the ball coming to the crease Northies were requiring 26 off 6 overs. This was down to 7 off the last 2 overs. Laria opened up his shoulders dispatching a zac rebounding off the sheds, followed by a single to see the Baldies home with 10 balls to spare. Arcella finished 30 not out and Laria with a quick fire 15 to keep the Bald Eagles pushing up the table.

Golden Eagles v Ginninderra @ Forestry – Won by 10 Wickets

At the picturesque Forestry ground the Tigers won the toss and decided to bat. This was their last success of the day as the Golden Eagles quickly went about working their way through the Ginninderra batting line up. Regular wickets for Wijewickrema and Coughlan put Northies on top. Wijewickrema retuned the indifferent figures of 3/49 from 9 overs. At the other end Coughlan stemmed the flow of runs producing 2/11 from 7 overs. They were followed up by Hohnke (3/12 from 9 overs) and Mitchell 1/4 from 2.2 overs) and the Ginninderra Tigers were dismissed for 75 in the 28th over.

After such an impressive display with the ball and in the field the Golden Eagles were left with a required rate of less than 2 runs per over and an ideal opportunity to pick up some bonus points. Coughlan and Zhang opened the batting and set about getting the runs in a quick fashion to secure the bonus points with Coughlan finishing 44 not out and Zhang 31 not out and completed within 18 overs. This gave them the ideal boost after such a tight loss at the same venue last week.

Round 5

Eagles v Tuggeranong @ Philip – Won by 119 Runs

“Life in the fast lane” Eagles make it 2 in a row against Tuggers @ Phillip

A great way to back up the win from the previous week. We decided to bat after winning the toss with another great batting display that helped us reach a very defendable total.

Brett Morris relished the opportunity to fill a vacant opening spot and played the perfect role by keeping the score ticking along. Early on, a well-timed straight drive unfortunately clipped the fingers of the bowler and rebounded onto the stumps which caught Salvo (12) short of his ground. This made way for Brett’s twin brother Scott to join him and they put on 88 for the 2nd wicket. Scott played some fantastic attacking shots and managed 8 boundaries in his innings. The Morris boys really paved the way for the rest of the team which allowed the incoming batsmen a chance to enjoy their time at the crease. John McCluskey was all class in his innings of 46 with 5 fours and 2 sixes and showed a great ability to find the gaps and keep rotating the strike. He was joined by Luke Saddler who is turning out to be a run scoring machine. Luke is a master of taking control of the bowling in the latter overs and added another 31 not out to his tally for the season. One of our juniors Ben Taylor really stepped up and gave us a taste of his class scoring 24 not out and showed a temperament well ahead of his years. One of the things that really helped us along was poor fielding, the opposing captain counted 14 catches that were put down by his team.

Some loose bowling early made things uncomfortable and although Carpy struggled to find his rhythm with the ball, his fielding was exceptional. A great chase and throw from deep square leg found the batsman short of his ground for our first wicket. Daryl Holmes bowled beautifully in his 9 over spell and was rewarded with 2/16. He is settling well into his role as an opening bowler. Junior Stuart Bridgen (1/20) also bowled well and took a wicket, this was after he put his body on the line to a ball travelling at great speed which left a nasty bruise on his forearm, but he battled on and contributed well. Wickets were falling steadily and by drinks we had them 7/68. John McCluskey backed up his great batting performance with some tight bowling and ended up with 2/12. Ben Taylor had a dream start with the ball hitting middle stump with his first delivery and another bowled in his first over. He bowled quick and tight ended up with 3 /11 (all bowled), this on top of 2 catches capped off a great first game for the young man. Overall a good display and the type of result we should expect against ordinary opposition. The next 3 weeks will be a big test against teams above us on the ladder. A big thanks to Chris Taylor for umpiring and Keith Bridgen for filling in and almost taking a screamer of a reflex catch in the gully.

Eagles 4/228 - Scott Morris 66, John McCluskey 46, Luke Saddler 31 no, Brett Morris 30, Ben Taylor 24 no

Ben Taylor 3/11, John McCluskey 2/12, Daryl Holmes 2/16,

Bald Eagles v Ginninderra @ Aranda – Won by 70 runs

With captain Steve Grimmett still away, the evergreen DA again took the reigns looking to follow up last weeks commanding win with another victory. Although losing the toss and being asked to bat DA took it upon himself to lead the troops from the front and opened up compiling 27 (25 singles) before being 6th man out in the 38th over. Moger (12), Laria (15) and Arcella (14) all made starts but none pushed on. A quick fire 24 from Carr at the death saw the Bald Eagles to 8/164 off their allotted 45 overs, ably assisted by an amazing 42 wides sent down by Ginninderra.

Needing early wickets to peg back the Ginninderra line up Ronnie Axelby and Joe Laria got the Bald Eagles off to the best possible start. Picking up wickets at regular intervals they soon reduced the Tigers to 8/35, sharing the first 8 wickets with Axelby producing the excellent figures of 5/33 from his 9 overs and Laria 3/15 from 7 overs. Although a late flurry of runs came from Glibert (21) and Staib (36), the breakthrough by Ammad Shamsi was soon follwed by Brad Roughton picking up the final wicket with the score on 95 and sealing another win for the Bald Eagles.

Golden Eagles v Eastlake @ Forestry – Lost by 10 runs

Having lost the toss and Eastlake deciding to make first use of the pitch at the picturesque Forestry Oval we got off to the ideal start. The new ball shared by Wijewickrema and Coughlan brought about greats rewards. Wijewickrema returned the economical figures of 0/9 from his 9 overs and Coughlan did the rest of the damage returning figures of 5/18. Assisted with a run out this reduced Eastlake to 6/40. This however brought together Edwin (38) and Martinesz (40) who went about rebuilding the innings and although they both fell they helped bring about a much more respectable score of 131 all out in the 43rd over.

The Golden Eagles went to the crease needing only 3 runs per over. The innings however started poorly and was not brought around until the destructive men with the ball were in tandem again. Coughlan from the top of the order scored 20, falling with the score on 71 and Wijewickrema scored 32 and fell shortly after reducing the Golden Eagles to 6/73. Still with a good chance of victory Zhang and Connor helped swing the balance back in Northies favour. Zhang (13) fell with the score on 100 and when Connor (23) went reducing the Golden Eagles to 8/121 the game was still in the balance with 11 runs required for victory. It was not meant to be though and with the 9th wicket also falling on 121 the final wicket went with only one more run added and the Golden Eagles fell agonisingly short with still 7 overs remaining

Round 4

Eagles v Weston Creek @ Mawson – Won by 120 runs

Eagles “Take it to the limit” for first win

This week’s mission was simple – we needed to get a win and restore some pride.

We won the toss and batted first. An early wicket set us back a little bit, but Andrew Cleghorn (20) and Stefano Mammoliti (60) batted aggressively and put us in a great position leading up to drinks (1-82). We witnessed some fantastic stroke play from both players, but Mamma’s was dominant and showed he will score plenty of runs this year. Both players were dismissed shortly after drinks which allowed Brett Morris (14) and Jordan Dang (23) to steady the ship again. Brett was solid and Danga’s was able to score freely for a time and keep the total ticking over. Luke Saddler played a solid innings and completed a good performance for us with the bat remaining 49 NO. Total score was 8/211.

We knew we had plenty of runs but needed some early wickets. Daryl Holmes (1/20) struck first with what was a pretty ordinary delivery, but a wicket is a wicket. His opening partner Nick Radford (1/16) bowled tight and was also rewarded with a wicket. The opening pair kept it tight and did their job in keeping the run rate to our advantage. Salvo DeLorenzo (4/14) had a dream start with a wicket in each of his first 4 overs. This was pretty much the start of the end for Weston, but one of the best reflex catches you will ever see taken by Brett Morris, was what inspired the team. A pull shot which seemed to be travelling to the boundary, was plucked an inch off the ground by Brett in his outstretched left hand. It was all downhill for Weston from there. Luke Saddler (1/32) bowled some crap and managed a wicket, then Mitchell New finished off the tail with a fantastic spell of 5 overs capturing 3/2. Weston Creek all out for 91. Although we dropped a few chances, we held catches when it mattered and it was good to get a win on the board. Hopefully this will be the start of more consistent performance for our team over the next few weeks.

Bald Eagles v Eastlake @ Forestry – Won by 7 wickets

With the captain away on holiday DA took over the reigns and lost the toss and was asked to field. With a team strengthened with no 4th grade games the evergreen Ron Axelby still took the new ball and produced a miserly spell of 9 overs 4/16. His early inroads into the Eastlake batting line up and with Laria getting 2/14 at the other end Eastlake found themselves 6/27 after 13 overs. A revival was on the cards with Eastlake moving to 6/64 however the introduction of Ammad Shamsi soon got Northies back on track and and returning figures of 2/17 Eastlake were bundled out for only 77.

With a low total chase Northies eyed up the chance to pick up some bonus points if they could produce a comprehensive win. The loss of Walthof without the scoreboard being troubled and Pigot for one saw the Bald Eagles reduced to 2/10 which soon became 3/18 with DA also going for only one. This however brought together Little (36*) and Moger (29*) who soon made run scoring seem easy and chased down the required runs in only 17 overs. This gave the Bald Eagles the 2 additional bonus points and a successful day at the picturesque Forestry Oval..

Golden Eagles v ANU @ O'Connor – Won by 28 Runs

With ANU winning the toss and electing to take to the field the Golden Ealges scored runs at a steady rate. Coughlan at the top of the order lead the way with an impressive 49 and Davis coming in at number 4 scored freely to get 55. The Northies innings was brough to a close with a commanding total of 7/179 from their allotted 45 overs.

With ANU set 4 runs an over to win the Northies bowlers stuck well to their task and never let the ANU batsmen get away. Only Grant with 45 got going for ANU and with wickets falling regularly the Golden Eagles never let the game out of their hands. Three wickets a piece for Hohnke and Mitchell brought home the victory with ANU all out for 151 with 7 balls remaining. This win continues to push the Golden eagles up the table.
