Day 1 v Tuggeranong @ Chisholm 1 - No Play
Washed Out
Day 1 v Weston Creek @ KTMO - Lead by 21 runs with 8 wickets to take
After the start was delayed for an hour after the wet weather on Thursday and Friday Norths lost the toss and were asked to bat first.
Kent and Wheatley headed out to the crease and Kent (2) fell in the 4th over. Walker (0) and Coggan (3) soon followed and Norths were reduced to 3/22 after the first hour. Wheatley and Gaskin started to rebuild the innings before Gaskin (14) fell to the spin of Ackeroyd however Blaszczyk came in and saw us through to lunch at 4/52. Although not the ideal start, on a bowler friendly pitch this was a start that could be built on.
Following lunch Wheatley soon fell for a stubborn 23 from 124 balls. Replaced by Cusden the score progressed to 75 in the 50th over before he fell for 8 and Blaszczyk was soon back in the pavilion for 19 followed by Rutzou (6) and Norths were 8/89. Bloomfield (1), Barnett (15) and McCaffrey(3*) added some lower order runs but Norths were all out for 107 on the stroke of tea. Jon Nicoll getting through a mammoth bowling spell of 29.1 overs finishing with 5/41.
Barnett and Bloomfield opened up with the new ball and although they did not get a breakthrough runs were kept low, well assisted by Rutzou coming on first change. The first breakthrough came when McCaffrey lured Ryan into a sweep shot, which he missed and was out LBW. Cusden then picked up the next wicket with no further runs scored and Creek were now 2/44 after 20 overs. McCaffrey (13 overs 1/26) and Cusden (11 overs 1/17) carried on working hard but did not get another wicket and Creek ended the day 2/87 from 39 overs requiring a further 21 runs for a 1st innings victory.
Day 2 v Weston Creek @ KTMO - Lost on First Innings. Norths 107ao, Creek 4/238dec, Norths 9/103
Play got underway at 11am and the outfield, still suffering from a heavy dew made it difficult for the bowlers with a very wet ball. Barnett and Bloomfield opened up but did not get a breakthrough. After Cusden was forced out of the attack with an injured shoulder after 2 balls, Gaskin came on to finish the over and burgled a wicket with the batsman possibly losing focus after doing the hard work in the first hour. This saw Creek at 3/124 and some more quick wickets could leave Norths in with a chance of reversing the result. Medhurst and Nicoll had a different idea though and added 94 for the 4th wicket before Medhurst fell for 45. Creek then declared at 4/238 when Nicoll brought up his hundred.
With 55 minutes to tea and Norths 131 runs in arrears there was no chance of turning this game around and seeing the day out to limit it to a first innings loss was the only objective. Things started badly with Wheatley (0) gone in the second over, by Kent (13) just before tea. At 2/35 things were looking ok and Coggan and Walker continued after tea looking solid until Walker (14) fell LBW with 80 minutes remaining. A crazy 10 minutes then ensued as Gaskin, Blaszczyk and Cusden who did not trouble the scorers followed and Norths were not 6/59 with still 70 minutes to play.
Coggan was then joined by Bloomfield who was patient and used up another valuable 45 minutes but when he fell 25 minutes still remained. Barnett came in and hung around for 22 minutes but also went and McCaffrey and Coggan needed to see out the remaining 4 minutes. McCaffrey fell to the last ball of the penultimate over and Coggan was left to face the last 6 deliveries with Rutzou anchored at the non strikers end. His solid defence stood firm and he saw the innings out finishing with 69 not out.
Day 1 v ANU @ ANU North - Trailing by 96 runs with 5 wickets remaining
After making the short trip to ANU the start was delayed due to a wet patch on a length and a soggy run up. With lunch taken early play commenced at 1pm and Northies won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Barney made a breakthrough with the 3rd ball delivering an edge to Paras behind the stumps and a leg side strangle reduced ANU to 2/25 in the 11th over. Cuzzy and Louie were then brought into the attack and kept it tight without the luck of a breakthrough. Barney returned before tea to pick up wickets in successive overs and another wicket 4 overs later to see ANU go into tea at 5/88 from 39 overs.
On resumption it only took Barney 2 overs to get back into his stride and struck with a double wicket maiden picking up the mainstay of the ANU innings, Friday Kasteni who fought hard to get 42. It was followed by a 4th entry into the scorebook of bowled Barnett, caught Sachdeva to leave ANU 7/99. Rutzou then struck bowling Long via the under side of his thigh pad and after some gutsy batting by the tail Bloomfield and Cusden picked up the last 2 wickets in successive over to bundle ANU out for 139. Barney finishing with 7/43 from 22 overs.
Norths then had 90 minutes to the close of play and start working towards their target. Wheatley (3) fell in the 5th over and was soon followed back to the sheds by Paras (7). Fitzsimmons (3) and Gaskin (0) then fell in the space of 3 balls and Greenwood (2) went 3 overs later. The diminishing light then meant the umpires pulled stumps early with Walker standing firm on 27 and Cusden yet to get off the mark and Norths closing 5/44 requiring 96 runs to claim the first innings points.

Day 2 v ANU @ ANU North - Lost on First Innings, Won Outright. ANU 139 all out, Norths 75 all out, ANU 101 all out, Norths 9/166
Resuming at 5/45 Northies still required 95 to claim the first innings win. Coggs went to the crease replacing the Red Dragon alongside Cuzzy. The pair looked solid, progressing the score steadily until the 29th over when Coggs (7) was caught trying to force some runs. He was followed soon after by Cuzzy (9) and Norths were 7/71. Rutzou (3) then fell on the same score and only 4 more runs were added by Barnett before he and McCaffrey both fell to see Northies bundled out for a paltry 75.
With 50 mins until lunch and a first innings deficit of 65 quick wickets were required and DJ duly obliged getting a wicket in the 8th over, followed next over by Barney and ANU went to lunch at 2/37, now leading by 102. Shortly after lunch the solid looking Kasteni (16) was run out going for 3 by DJ and Coggs picked up an LBW to quickly reduce ANU to 4/50. ANU then progressed the score gradually before a Giraffe long hop saw Bennett (29) drag it to mid on. Barney also returned and again paired up with Paras to claim the next wicket, followed next over with a caught and bowled saw Barney go to 10 wickets for the match. The Giraffe then polished off the last 2 wickets and with the ANU number 11 not at the game they were all out for 101 setting Northies a target of 166 from a minimum of 39 overs.
The returning CK and Wheats went to the crease and made a solid start before CK (16) fell on the stroke of tea, meaning the break was taken with Northies 1/28 off 7 overs. Paras (0) went out after tea and fell quickly to a catch at the wicket. Although Northies were staying with the run rate, wickets were again falling at a steady rate and when Coggan (7), Wheatley (23), Greenwood (5) and Gaskin (22), along with the first two wickets all six wickets had fallen to the spin of Bennett and Rego. Norths were left at 6/75 off 20 overs. The spin duo however was to Norths benefit as the increased over rate meant extra overs may become available.
Cusden (10) fell with the score on 87 and Norths were only just over half way with 7 wickets down. This brought Bloomfield to the crease and along with Rutzou progressed the score at the required rate to 112 before Rutzou also fell to the spin being caught behind. Barnett was next in and with still 54 required and only 2 wickets remaining things looked bleak. Bloomfield however had the bit between his teeth and kept the score progressing steadily towards the target. Barnett (13) then fell and with 18 still needed McCaffrey came to the crease. The minimum number of overs has now been bowled but 10 minutes still remained. Bloomfield managed to find the boundary again for the returning Borren and again from Bennett leaving 2 required with 1 minute and the last over remaining. With a leg bye off the 3rd ball McCaffrey fired through cover to get the winning run while Bloomfield finished with a career best 43 not out and guiding Norths to victory. With the loss on first innings this mean Northies only left with 6 points for all their hard work.
v Queanbeyan @ KTMO - Lost by 31 runs
Still holding onto 4th spot in the ladder after favourable results in round 6 Norths faced Queanbeyan knowing a win would guarantee a semi final spot. After winning the toss and bowling first Norths could not have got off to a better start with the dangerous Jono Dean removed first ball, followed by brother Blake in the same over. Rutzou then claimed a wicket in the 4th over and Queanbeyan were 3/17. Cusden came into the attack and took a wicket in his first over and opposing captain Ayre fell soon after and tettering at 5/48 after 11 overs. Barnett finished his 10 over spell with 3/23 and with wickets for the returning Rutzou and Storman, Queanbeyan were further reduced to 7/95 at the halfway stage. McCaffrey was then introduced to the attack and although started slowly he picked up a wicket in his 7th and 8th overs reducing the Bluebags to 9/145, and finishing with 2/37 from his allotment, still with 14 overs remaining. The last pair of Taylor (34) and Southwell (37n.o) took the score to 200 with some mighty blows from the top scoring number 11 and the pair adding 55 in only 8 overs.
With a target of 4 an over required steady batting was required. Walker set off at a high tempo looking to punce on anything full but fell early. Sachdeva then came to the crease and too the attack to Queanbeyan with some aggressive batting but fell for 43 from 38 balls with the score on 74. Fitzzimmons (4) soon followed and then Wheatley (21) was run out from slips after being fixed on the umpire to make a decision after a loud LBW shout and Norths were now 4/81 after 20 overs. Gaskin and Greenwodd went about getting the chase back on track however Greenwood (35) fell with still 65 runs required. He was quickly followed by Cusden (4), Gaskin (25) and Rutzou (7) and now 43 were still required with only 2 wickets remaining off the last 10 overs. McCaffrey was then bowled through the gate and with the injury stricken Blaszczyk coming to the crease at 11 the last wicket fell on 169, 31 runs short.
With results not going in Northies favour in this round it meant they now miss out on a semi final spot for the second year running and will now have to focus on the 2 day competition for some silverware.
v Eastlake @ Marist - Lost by 53 runs
Returning to the One Day Competition after Christmas we made the trip to Marist to take on Eastlake. After losing the toss and being asked to bowl on a flat deck Norths started fairly slowly however an impressive 6 overs from Rutzou only yielded 11 runs. Spin was quickly introduced and although this did slow the runs scoring it still did not bring about a wicket. This did not come until the 34th over when Gaskin made the breakthrough with Eastlake on 177, claiming O’Malveny for 85 caught at long on by Fitzsimmons. A second wicket was claimed by Gaskin 3 balls later and Norths were slowly coming back into the game. With a run out and a wicket to Coggan (1/55 from 10 overs) and McCaffrey (1/60 off 10 overs) Eastlake were reduced to 5/215 with 6 overs remaining. Eastlake then took their batting power play and added 65 in the last 5 overs taking 28 off the last over including 4 maximums. This set Norths a target of 292 to win.
Gaskin moved to the top of the order and fell LBW off the 4th ball bringing Coggan to the crease in his new role at number 3. As he began to settle in he accumulated runs freely and took the score to 70 when Wheatley fell for 18 off 47 deliveries. Fennell batting at 4 followed by Fitzsimmons and Kent all fell for 2 runs each and Norths were reduced to 5/95 at the halfway stage leaving 196 required off the last 25 overs. Greenwood (16) helped move the score to 135 and Coggan and Blaszczyk moved the score to 195 before Coggs was caught for a remarkable 120. The rate was now up to 10 runs an over and although Blaz and Rutzou tried to keep the rate up Norths were all out for 238, Blaz finishing 47 not out.
Day 1 v Wests UC @ KTMO - Trail by 138 runs, 2 wickets remaining.
After the one day game played in the last round we were now back to proper 2 day cricket. With it came the arrival of Wests to KTMO. The team was back nearing full strength with the return of Kent, Gaskin and Cusden, however injury still kept Coggan on the sidelines.
Norths proceeded to win the toss and invited Wests to bat. Despite making a fairly rapid start and getting to 27 in the 6th over the first breakthrough came when Rutzou had the left handed Sunderland caught behind. This was followed up next over with Barnett removing Duffy, well pouched by Cusden in second slip. Cusden was then introduced into the attack in the 11th over and made immediate inroads with a wicket in his second over. Another wicket for Rutzou and two more for Cusden saw Wests go to lunch at 6/84 and Cusden with the impressive figures of 11 overs, 3/7, including 8 maidens.
After lunch the early removal of Oakley took the score to 7/84 and when Polhill also fell to Cusden it saw Wests slip to 8/126 and Norths with the opportunity to quickly wrap up the innings. Wests Irish Wicketkeeper however had other ideas and after having the luck of the Irish with 3 catches put down he finished on 101 not out and worked with the tail to take Wests up to 215 all out at the tea interval. Cusden getting through a mammoth 23 overs unchanged and being rewarded with 5/40.
After the tea interval Norths had the ideal opportunity to make inroads to the score that had been set on what was now a flat deck. The Wests attack however had other ideas. First to go was Kent for 2 followed by Blaszczyk (9), Gaskin (3), Fitzsimmons (2), Greenwood and Cusden (both 0) and Rutzou (1) taking Norths to the feeble position of 7/31. Duffy opened up with 3 wickets in his first 7 deliveries and later picked up McCaffrey (7) to finish the day with 4/21 from 10 overs. A solid display from former Wests player Matt Wheatley saw him finish on 38 not out, carrying his bat through the session. After being joined by Bloomfield (8 not out) with the score on 51 they have so far progressed it to 78 when stumps were drawn for the day. With Norths still requiring 138 for victory on first innings and 38 to avoid the possibility of being asked to follow on hopefully inspiration can be taken from the Wests latter order and a similar rearguard action carried out on day 2.
Day 2 v Wests UC @ KTMO - Lost on First Innings. Wests 215 all out, Norths 106 all out and 9/268 dec(fo), Wests 5/95.
Trailing by 138 with 2 wickets remaining the first aim was to avoid the follow on. With opener Wheatley still at the crease this seemed a possibility. After progressing the score by 14 from the overnight total he fell LBW for a gutsy 41 off 102 balls in 161 minutes and adding 43 with Djali for the 9th wicket. Barnett came to the crease and continued to keep the score ticking with Bloomfield who now had his eye in. Barnett however fell to a catch at the wicket and Northies were all out for 106, still 109 adrift. Bloomfield left high and dry on 23 off 57 deliveries.
Norths were asked to follow on and Wheatley went in the second over for a duck. Blaz (7) soon followed and Norths were again on the ropes at 2/19. Gaskin and Kent restored the innings and saw us through to lunch without further alarm and reducing the deficit to 46. Kent fell soon after lunch for 36 and Fitzsimmons came to the crease who moved Norths into a lead alongside Gaskin. Both batsmen found the boundary frequently and added an impressive 92 in only 48 when Fitzy fell for 45 from 44 balls. Gaskin then fell for 80 from 77 balls and was soon followed by Cusden (20), Greenwood (7) and McCaffrey (0) which left Norths with a lead of only 98 with still 30 minutes to tea. Bloomfield and Rutzou saw us to tea without further alarm and we went to the interval at 8/251 after the pair added 47 in only 25 minutes.
Now with a lead of 145 talks of a declaration were hotting up and with runs coming freely the lead was advanced to 154 when Rutzou fell for 22. Barnett came to the crease and scored 8 before Gaskin called the batsmen in, Bloomfield remaining 31 not out off 34 balls to go with his first innings score of 23 not out.
Setting Wests a target of 160 with 95 minutes remaining in the day there was still a chance for the result to go all 3 ways. Bloomfield made the first break through in the 9th over and with Cusden adding 2-13 off 5 overs and a wicket a piece for Gaskin and McCaffrey stumps were drawn with Wests 5/95 leaving a first innings win for Wests.
v Albury @ Mark Taylor Oval, Leeton – Lost by 9 Wickets
After the miserable days play against Eastlake the team had to pack up their kit and get aboard the bus for the unenviable trip to Leeton to play their final Konica game against Albury. With a miracle required for any chance of qualification the players still willingly made themselves available to endure the outback adventure.
Travelling was going well and an early stop was made in Yass for some energy food. KFC proving more popular than McDonalds on a 6-5 count. Music was added to the trip and many shanty’s were sung along the way to Gundagai. After a stop to visit the Dog on the Tuckerbox and another food break was required. Sadly for Djali we were merely moments too late for him to enjoy a Subway. We therefore had to press on to Wagga Wagga. After a visit to the town and a drive down the main strip we headed on to the Bloomfield residence where after a very generous offer we would reside for the night.
Hospitality was excellent and after a feast was prepared for breakfast we continued on to Leeton. Shortly after setting of the dreaded fuel light came on and with the next know inhabitance still some 70km away it was decided to swing the bus around and head back for fuel. After this slight delay, and the opportunity for some people to grab some liquids to get on board we headed off again. The roads were quiet at this time and after a slight delay getting a lecture about the issues of fruit fly’s and being held up held up due to some navigating skills, excuses including the map was not the English way up and the trailer door becoming unhinged and the loss of a couple of items, we made it to the ground with moments to spare.
So after 5 hours travelling we made it to the Mark Taylor Oval. Although in a nice setting it did lack any changing rooms, running water and any form of privacy. We therefore had to resort to making the most of the stands that were available and the nearby stream. Being without normal surroundings this did not unsettle our early pace and after being asked to bat raced to 1/34 inside the first 6 overs with Wheatley the only casualty. This unfortunately was the peak on the field for the day, wickets then began to fall rapidly and fell to 5/51 in the 10th over. Although a slight recovery was brought about by Fitzy (19) and TR seeing us to 5/72 in the 15th over, 3 wickets in 3 balls, 2 of which were run outs in the 18th over killed any hope of a flurry at the end. Norths finally closing all out for 90 off the last ball of the innings.
After a quick discussion of tactics in the outfield we set about defending a below par total. Albury attacked for the off and quickly moved to 1/50 in the 7th over. Spin was introduced in the hope this would stem runs however a couple of lusty blows came and a few spilt catches meaning Albury made it home with 9 overs and 9 wickets to spare.
So, after only 2 hours on the field it was back on the bus. After a stop for lunch at the Soldiers Club it was back aboard for the trip home. A visit to the bottle shop help lighten the mood for the trip home. Fines were carried out and harsh punishment placed on some players. The full and final version of the Ode to Stephen Moore was recorded, at least bringing some success out of the trip. George McCaffrey attempted to go where no man had been before and drink a goon of wine on this lengthy trip, a challenge on the scale of David Boon and his 50 some odd cans on the flight from England. Sadly for George he fell short and no more fluid was consumed after the stop in Yass. He did however catch up on some sleep during the last 40 minutes of the trip.
A plan headed up by Wheats to show the poms a tree related to Ned Kelly to try and form some sort of worship for the place of his atrocities failed dismally when his cohorts couldn’t even agree on a turning off the Hume Highway. After some bickering the truth came out and we carried on home. After a decision was made to make a few stops once we were back in civilisation to start emptying the bus of bodies a run in with a curb held us up a bit more. After being informed by a fellow motorist of the flat nature of our tyre and a close inspection by ourselves it was deemed that the foot long gash was not going to be repaired and we would need the spare. With no jack in sight we had to make a call to the fourth emergency service…Google. He came to the teams rescue we gave him a beer, played him his song and he changed the tyre in 7.34 seconds. Even Mark Webber would have been impressed with the speed!!
So we made it back to KT in one piece, the bus parked up for the night and people headed off into the distance. Hopefully next year we will get home draws for anywhere outside ACT!!
Day 1 v Eastlake @ KTMO – No play on day 1
Washed out
Day 2 v Eastlake @ KTMO – Lost in a 1 day Game
After the full grade washout last weekend the game was reduced to a one day game. Norths proceeded to win the toss and make first use of the track. With 1st grade debuts handed to Rich Walker and Tim Wills and the inclusion of Fitzsimmons and Fennell Norths lined up with a much changed team. Gaskin, Kent and Cusden were away and Coggan picked up an injury representing the under 19's.
The Dragon went straight in at the top of the order and opened up with Wheats. Wheatus (2) fell in the 3rd over, followed by Blaz (0) in the 5th over. LK and the dragon saw us to 23 in the 13 over until Greenwood (7) was bowled. He was quickly followed by to the pavilion by The two debutants, Walker for a gutsy 11 and Wills for only 3. Then followed the run out of Fennell (2) and Rutzou (1) and McCaffrey (2) both bowled leaving Norths 8/48 in only the 26th over. <\p>
This left Fitzy and Barney at the crease with nearly half of the overs still to use. they went about rebuilding the innings making steady progress. Fitzy accumulated runs well and made it to 50 off only 64 deliveries. A couple of zacs later and he was finally dismissed for 63 with the pair adding 67 in 15 overs. Bloomfield came to the crease and a further 17 were added leaving Norths all out for 132.<\p>
The only hope for victory was a plethora of wickets and after an early wicket a piece for Bloomfield and Barnett Eastlake were reduced to 2/20. This unfortunately was the last success for some time with the next wicket falling at 89. A couple of lusty blows off the spin of McCaffrey rapidly moved Eastlake towards the total and with Dinham finishing unbeaten on 58 off 67 balls the visitors were home with 7 wickets and 22 overs to spare<\p>
v Ginninderra @ Kippax 2 - Lost by 1 Wicket
With a number of enforced changes for Northies this gave the opportunity for Big Red to make his 1st Grade debut and he led us off with Wheats after winning the toss. We made good progress getting to 29 in the 4th over before Wheats fell, caught for 11. Blaz (8) and Sammy G (2) also came and went befor ethe halfway stage at which we reached 3/54. Fitzy (2) also fell soon after followed by Greenwood (8) and then Walker for a well deserved 38 off 41 balls. Coggan then got 24 off only 19 balls with some excellent running and a couple of 2’s from DJ brough the Northis innings to a close at 8/120 from the allotted overs. Both rain and wickets fell steadily throughout the innings hindering any chance of a higher score.
With McCaffrey now back to full fitness he took the new ball and was rewarded in his second over . With Barnett also then picking up a wicket and the new men in struggling to get the ball another wicket a piece followed and saw McCaffrey finish with 2/14 and Barnett 2/16 both from their allotted 4 overs. After a tight introduction from Bloomfiled and Rutzou this saw the Tigers struggling at 5/37 at the halfway point. Ginninderra, with nothing to lose then took 44 from the next 4 overs from Bloomfiled and Rutzou and quickly got themselves back in with a chance requiring 40 from the last 6 overs. The two men who did the damage, Christain (32 from 20) and Suidgeest (26 from 19), then both fell in the next over after Coggan was brought into the attack however they took 13 from the over, 26 now required from 5 overs. Rutzou was then bowled out and it was down to 20 off 4 overs. 10 runs from the second over from Coggan and it 10 from 3 overs. Bloomfield then also bolwed out and took the wicket of Nicolaides (12 from 13) and it was left at 8 from 2 overs. Coggan finished tightly only conceding 3 runs and forcing a run out. 5 from the last over with 1 wicket remaining. Captain Sammy G stood up to the plate and after a single was follwed by a dot it left 4 from 4. A 2 to number 11 Jansen took it to 2 from 3 and he followed up with another double next ball to guide the Tigers home with 2 balls and 1 wicket remaining.
Day 1 v Ginninderra @ Kippax 2 - Match still in Progress, Lead by 371 runs, 10 wickets required.
The start of the 2 -Day Comp saw us take the trip to Kippax 2 to start our campaign against Ginninderra. After the success we saw with the bat last season we wanted to post another commanding score. We won the toss and chose to bat on a good track however things rapidly turned bad when we were reduced to 3/10 in the 8th over. Wheatley (1) was run out in the second over followed by Blaszczyk (2) and Kent (2) both cleaned bowled. This brought the captain Sam Gaskin to the crease along with Tim Coggan who set about rebuilding the innings and guided us through to 3/104 at lunch, Gaskin on to 61 and Coggan 35.
Both men continued after lunch until Gaskin feel, caught behind to ex-Northies player Du Toit for an impressive 82 adding 148 for the 4th wicket. Coggan was then joined by Liam Greenwood and things continued to go Norths way with a further 97 being added for the 5th wicket before Coggan fell 7 minutes before tea for his first 1st grade hundred finishing on 118. Norths went to tea at 5/258.
Coming back out after tea Northies wanted to push on to set a commanding score and although Cusden (1) fell early Louis Rutzou add a further 54 with Greenwood before being run out for 17. McCaffrey (2) came and went however Greenwood stood firm to become the second man today to score his inaugural 1st Grade century, finally departing for an remarkable 124 in the 95th over of the day. Barnett (2) fell to the last ball of this over caught in slip leaving Northies with a mammoth 371 to bowl at next week.
Day 2 v Ginninderra @ Kippax 2 – Won on First Innings. Norths 371 all out, Ginninderra 182 all out and 9/104
With a commanding 371 on the board this allowed Northies to go out and attack the Tigers from the off. Barney and DJ opened up and after a lot of near misses the first wicket came in the 5th over with a caught behind to Barney. He picked up another wicket soon after and the introduction of Cuzzy saw sheer pace take care of the next wicket. Barney picking up a caught and bowled reduced Ginninderra to 4/42 and things were looking good. This brought Suidgeest and Chrsitian to the crease who began to rebuild for the Tigers and saw them through to lunch at 4/103.
McCaffrey made the break though trapping Suidgeest LBW for 44 and Gaskin followed up next over with his deadly wicket-taking full toss to remove Christian, also for 44. McCaffrey then picked up a caught and bowled in the next over to reduce the Tigers to 7/132 and swing the game back into North favour. DuToit (12) and Thumma progressed the score to 151 but then a double LBW strike from McCaffrey saw the home team slip to 9/159 and McCaffrey pick up the impressive figures of 4/51 from 19 uninterrupted overs. Wilcox (16) and Thumma (14*) took the score to 182 before Barney returned to pick up the number 11 and finish with 4/35 from 13 overs, allowing Northies to enforce the follow on.
This gave Northies 30 minutes until tea to see what they could produce. The break through came in the last over before tea meaning 9 wickets to take in the last session.
After tea Rutzou was introduced for the first time in the game and keeping him hidden proved to be fruitful. With a wicket in both his second and third over the score was 3/45 with still 90 minutes to play. Another double success in overs 5 and 6, along with a second wicket for Barnett then saw the score fall to 6/70. Due to age restrictions Rutzou had to be removed from the attack and ended with the remarkable figures of 4/14 from 8 overs, giving Norths a great chance to pick up the outright win. Jansen came to the crease to join Owen and they used up some valuable, even and over from Wheatley could not force the breakthrough. Finally Coggan was brought into the attack his tweakers brought about the downfall of Owen for 30 after spending over 2 hours at the crease. DuToit came and went with a running catch by Barnett in the deep and with an LBW for Barnett off his final ball giving him 3/47 from another 13 overs and saw 6 balls for the last wicket. DJ was bowling and after 3 LBW shouts were turned down the batman managed to some how squeeze out the last couple of balls to dent the outright win. 6 points however was a good start to the 2-day competition and gives them a good start to build on.
v ACT Under 19's @ KTMO – No Result
Washed Out
v Eastlake @ KTMO – Won by 8 runs
After losing the toss and being put into bat Northies got off to a solid stat with Wheats (12) and CK (29 taking the score to 43 in the 7th over. Eastlake then fought back and 3 wickets fell in 3 overs leaving Northies 3/61 and the halfway stage and the innings in the balance. With Blaz and The Hoff at the crease however momentum quickly swung back into Noths favour and with 53 runs added in the next 5 overs before Blaz (25) was run out and a final 5 over flurry was set up. The Hoff took kindly to the bowling of Shaw taking him for 7 Zacs and finishing on 75 from 27 balls through 22 scoring shots (9 sixes, 2 fours), however Shaw finally got the better of the battle removing him with a catch on the boundary and ending with 1/54 from his 4 overs and Northies closing on 6/158.
Northies made quick in roads with the first wicket taken without a run being scored and the next wicket reducing Eastlake to 2/8. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals and with Sammy “T-Rex” Gaskin and Matt Fennell picking up 2 wickets a piece Eastlake were left requiring 55 off the last 5 overs. Although a hefty amount Tett and Quinliuan set about making the games theirs and and with a couple of expensive overs from Rutzou and Coggs towards the death 18 were required from the last over. DJ stepped up though and bowled a tight over conceding only 10 runs to see Norths home with 8 runs to spare and success in their morning fixture.
v Queanbeyan @ KTMO – Lost by 7 wickets
With T-Rex finally winning a toss he choose to bat first against a strong Queanbeyan team. With CK and Coggs missing on ACT U19’s duty Fitzy and Paras came into the team and with McCaffrey injured in the warm up of the morning game TR was also called upon from the Magoo’s.
Northies moved also to 16 runs in the 4th over before some kamikaze running saw Paras (10) run out by the length of the pitch. Wheats accumulated singles around the wicket before falling for 11 and Gaskin (1) also misjudged a run seeing him left short of his ground for the second time today. Again this brought Blaz and The Hoff to the crease who moved the score to 79 before Blaz was bowled for 23 off 20 balls. Cairns then took a four off Higgs which seemed to thrown him off his stride with this followed up with 3 consecutive leg side wides. The board continued to tick over however with Cairns (41 from 33 balls) falling in the 17th over the impetus seen in the first game was not possible however a quickfire 16 from 11 balls for Fennell saw Northies close at 7/138 from their 20 overs.
Queanbeyan set about the chase in destructive fashion taking 21 from the first over from Gaskin and 19 from the second from Barnett to leave them 0/40 off 2 overs and putting a big dent in the required total. The introduction of Rutzou brought about immediate success with Dean removed for 33 from 11 balls. Higgs also followed 2 overs later to the same bowler caught by Gaskin for 26 from 16 balls. DJ and TR also produced a couple of tight overs however with the early damage done it was always an uphill task. Queanbeyan crossed the line courtesy of a blitz of six hitting from Spaseski taking 4 consecutive 6’s from Fennell and finishing the job with 5 overs to spare.
v Leeton @ KTMO – Won by 8 Wickets
Leeton made the long trip to KTMO on Sunday and duly won the toss and decided to have a bat. After getting off to a good score and taking the score to 43 after 4 overs Louis Rutzou was brought into the attack and quickly removed Burns for 22 from 9 balls. Gaskin also had immediate success and finished with the impressive figures of 4/15 from his allotted 4 overs. With Leeton in the commanding position of 4/91 at the halfway stage it looked as ifd Northies could be chasning a sizeable total however the introduction of the spin twin Coggs also reaped great rewards with figures of 4/21 with a hat-trick opportunity, only to deliver a no-ball. The Leeton innings was quickly wrapped up for 110.
Wheats and CK again lead off the Northies innings however Wheats was dismieed in the second over bringing Blaz to the crease. Runs came at the required rate with the accumulation of ones and two’s all around the wicket. CK fell with the score on 100 for an impressive 41 from 47 balls and Blaz (51 from 44 balls) saw the job through with the captain to give Northies their second success of the weekend.
v Ginninderra @ KTMO - Won by 64 runs
With rain in the air a late start was required however play got under way by 11:15. As always Norths lost the toss and were sent into the bat
A truly disastrous start came about when Chris “CK” Kent was bowled second ball and Seb “Blaz” Blaszczyk came to the crease to join Matt “Wheats” Wheatley. They brought the score along to 45 before after a short rain break however this break seemed to revitalize the Tigers and they soon pegged Norths back. Wheats stood firm at one end but Norths were reduced to 7/86 with the removal of Blaz (18), Sam “Sammy G” Gaskin (0), Chris “The Hoff” Cairns (2), Liam “LK” Greenwood (3), Tim “Coggs” Coggan (1) and Simon “Cuzzy” Cusden (18).
The fightback then began with Wheats and George “Buggsy” McCaffrey progressing the score to 116 before Wheats fell for 44. Louis “Louie” Rutzou then came to the crease and runs were being collated at a good rate before a mix up which saw Buggsy caught just short of his ground and run out for 9. Andy “Barney” Barnett then joined Louie with the score at 9/134 and the threat of another low total to defend however still 10 overs remaining to post a more imposing score. The two went about accumulating runs and ended up adding an unbeaten 53 with Louie finishing on a 1st grade best 44* and Barney on 25* and the innings brought to a close at 9/187.
The tigers, requiring 3.75 per over were progressing nicely before Reardon was caught in the gully by CK off the bowling of Djali “DJ” Bloomfield. The runs however then began to dry up and with 10 overs from Barney only conceding 24 runs the required rate was soon creeping up. The introduction of The Hoff saw 4 overs only concede 7 runs and with Louie sending down 5 overs 1/16, Buggsy 7 overs 2/14 and the captain Sammy G 7 overs 3/19 Northies kept control of the game.
The turning point however was a 9 ball spell for Northies which saw 4 wickets fall for only 3 runs. Entwined in this was an excellent Hat Trick for DJ. Spread over 2 overs nobody was actually aware until long after the third wicket was taken however the trio of a superlative bouncer, a ball that was left which swung in clipping the top of off stump and a spearing Yorker would have accounted for many a team
Norths still sit in 4th spot on the ladder and will need to continue this one day form to reach the finals after the Christams break.

v Wests @ Jamison Oval - Won by 1 wicket
Looking for revenge on last years one day game at Jamison returning captain Sam Gaskin lost the toss and Norths were sent into the field.
Wests got off to a steady start and reached 43 before George McCaffrey got the first break through bowling Richards and then picking up another wicket in his next over. From then on wickets fell at regular intervals and the introduction of Tim “Coggs” Coggan also brought immediate success with a wicket in both of his first 2 overs. Andy “Barney” Barnett then returned to pick up 2 wickets in 2 balls to finish the Wests innings on 178, perhaps slightly more than they should have got but helped out by an amazing 21 wides bowled by Norths.
In reply Matt “Wheatus” Wheatley, returning to his old stomping ground got off to a steady start with Chris “CK” Kent playing a fine array of cover drives off the opening attack from Wests. CK was then unlucky to be caught at third man after thrashing a ball away. Wickets then began to fall steadily however a quick fire 38 from Chris “still thinking of a nickname” Cairns including a couple of trademark Zacs over long off got Norths in front of the rate. A further 25 from Liam “LK” Greenwood and 19 from Coggs saw Norths to within 40 runs of victory with 5 wickets remaining. Again however not to want to make it too easy Norths went from 5/135 to 9/155. This left Simon “Cuzzy” Cusden and Barney at the crease needing 24 to win off 8 overs. Runs were slowly gathered through a number of extras and a couple of singles. Cuzzy then unleashed a huge Zac off McGann. 6 leg byes were then accumulated off the next over from Oakley and McGann then bowled 2 wides to bring the scores level. With 1 required Barney flicked the ball away over mid wicket to get the required run and bring victory to Northies.
This leaves the 1st Grade with 2 wins and 2 losses from the first 4 games and tied second on the ladder.
v Tuggeranong @ KTMO - Lost by 2 wickets
Seb “Blaz” Balszczyk took over at the helm with Sam Gaskin living it up on his honeymoon and Chris Cairns away working.
Tuggers won the toss and elected to have a bowl on a KT pitch that as always offers a bit of assistance in the first hour. They made the most of this and Norths were soon reduced to 3/10 with Sachdeva, Wheatley and Kent not using up any ink from the scorers pen. Norths were further reduced to 5/50 and then to 8/80 which brought George “Buggsy” McCaffrey and Liam “LK” Greenwood together at the crease. The pair added 44 in 13 overs with George succumbing with 3 overs left for a very well compiled 23. LK continued his onslaught and was left high and dry on 38, including 2 Zacs. The North innings was brought to close on 128 with 11 balls remaining when Djali “DJ” Bloomfield was caught short of his ground.
With a low total to defend Norths needed to make early inroads and DJ picked up the first 4 wickets to reduce Tuggers to 4/64 and finish with figures of 4/39 from his allotted 10 overs. Buggsy produced a miserly spell at the other end also claiming 4 wickets for only 21 runs and leaving Tuggers at 8/102. With 27 still required the game was in the balance but unfortunately Norths did not make any further break through and Tuggers made it over the line with 2 wickets to spare.
This leaves Norths with 1 win and 2 losses and currently sitting tied 3rd in the table.
v Weston Creek @ Stirling Oval - Lost by 7 wickets
Off the back of yesterdays win Northies came into the game full of confidence with the bat and proceeded to win the toss and bat.
Norths got off to solid start and raced to 37 in the 8th over before Sachdeva was out caught. Following on from this wickets fell at regular intervals and Norths were reduced to 3/52 with the top 3 back in the sheds. This brought new recruit Tim Coggan, signed from Queanbeyan during the off season and Cairns to the crease. They progressed the score to 113 before Coggan was out stumped for 30 and Cairns was then removed for 46 with the score moving to 5/155 in the 38th over. The innings then tailed away with only a further 28 runs added in the next 10 overs for the loss of the remaining wickets bringing the Norths innings to a close on 183 with 20 balls remaining.
With a below par score on the board on the impressive Stirling wicket an early breakthrough was supplied by Angus Storman who removed Rhynhart to leave Creek 1/20. Unfortunately this was the last success for some time and ACT Comets player Nicoll and Field progressed the score to 127 before Field was removed by Bloomfield for 68 from 74 balls. There was another wicket for McCaffrey but this was the last glimmer of hope for Norths with Weston Creek making it home with 7 wickets and 8 overs remaining. Nicoll finishing 69*.
This left Norths with one win and one loss over the opening weekend
v ANU @ KTMO - Won by 195 runs
With a new look Norths lining up and 8 new recruits making their debut in the 1st Grade there was high expectation for the team.
With new signing Chris Cairns at the helm he inevitably lost the toss and ANU decided to bowl. With the new pairing of Matt Wheatley and Paras Sachdeva opening up they moved the score along to 25 before Wheatley was out caught. This brought another new signing to the crease, promising PNG signing Chris Kent. Sachdeva went for 44 and Kent for 21 bringing together ‘keeper Seb Blaszczyk and Captain Cairns.
This lead to a shift in proceeding and moved Norths from the precarious position of 3/89 Blaszczyk and Cairns added a club record 191 for the 4th wicket, Cairns contributing 141 from 66 balls including12 Zacs and six 4’s. Blaszczyk added 44 to this partnership and finished with an impressive 75* from 83 balls. This left Norths with an imposing 5/319 off their allotted 50 overs.
With a required rate of 6.38 runs per over it was going to require some impressive striking to chase down this total. Unfortunately the ANU innings never got going and fell away to 124 all out in the 31st over. The tall leg spinner George McCaffrey was the pick of the bowlers claiming 3/27 and Louis Rutzou 2/34.
With such a convincing win this also gave Norths 2 extra bonus points which could prove crucial in the final standings.
