The history of Norths cricket has its foundations in several clubs. As Canberra became larger in population many of the original inner city clubs merged to allow additional teams entry to the ACTCA competition. Amalgamations in 1969/70 between the older Ainslie (founded in 1914), Northbourne (1925), Turner (1948) and Northern Suburbs (1963) cricket teams created both the City District CC and Northern Suburbs District CC. The newly formed City won the 1st grade premiership in its first year (69/70) in the competition.
In 1988/89 the City District Cricket Club and the Daramalan Cricket Club (sub district club) joined forces as a means of improving City's chances of remaining in the competition and to obtain sponsorship from the Daramalan Rugby Social Club. The agreement also provided players from Daramalan with the opportunity to play grade cricket (The Daramalan CC had for some years lobbied the ACTCA to be included in the grade competition).
In 1989/90 the ACTCA decided to reduce the size of the grade competition from 10 to 8 teams and basically forced the merger of the City - Daramalan C C with the Northern Suburbs District CC. The Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club and the Woden and South Woden Cricket Clubs also merged to forms Souths (now Eastlakes).
After some lengthy negotiations the executives of both Clubs it was agreed to name the new club the Canberra North Daramalan Cricket Club. In agreeing to the new name the word North and the color gold was included as means of maintaining some identification with the old Northern Suburbs Club. The royal blue, light blue and the eagle badge was maintained to continue the connection with the old City -Daramalan Cricket Club. Incidentally the colors of the old Ainslie Cricket Club were light blue and dark blue.
In 1995/96 the club name was changed to the North Canberra Ainslie Cricket Club. This was done for sponsorship reasons (The Daramalan Football Club had Gone Broke).
In 1999/2000 The club changed its name to North Canberra Gungahlin Cricket Club. The main reason for this was that the ACTCA had allocated the new Gungahlin area to North's for junior development purposes so it was thought that the name of the club should identify with the area.
The following is a history of 1st grade premierships won by the 'parent clubs.
North Canberra Gungahlin Cricket Club is a community focused cricket club who provide an environment where cricketers of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels can enjoy their cricket and develop their skills.
We participate in CricketACT Mens, Womens and Juniors competitions as well as in the Canberra City & Suburban Cricket Association competition. We have approximately 200 senior members and supporters in addition to over 27 junior teams and more than 100 "in2cricket" participants (aged 8 years and younger). Historically we have been based in close proximity to the centre of Canberra and over the last decade have developed a strong presence in the growth suburbs of Gungahlin. Our three home grounds are currently located in Ainslie (Keith Tournier Oval), Reid and Dickson; with two new Ovals and a clubhouse at Harrison expected to be completed for the 2010/11 season.
